One of the most important keys to staying healthy also happens to be one of the easiest…drink a lot of water! Sounds simple enough, right? But you’d be shocked by how many men and women – of all ages – fail to consume sufficient amounts of H2O…and the consequences can be catastrophic!

How Much Water is Recommended?

Our bodies require water to function properly and, ultimately, to survive. There are multiple calculations for how much water you should drink on a daily basis. The most universally-accepted amount is three-quarters of an ounce to one ounce for every pound you weigh. So, for example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink between 113 and 150 ounces each day – at minimum. Also, be sure to factor in how much exercise you get. The more you exert yourself and the more you sweat, the more water you need to drink in order to replace those lost fluids.

A gallon is 128 ounces so, to keep it simple, on typical days, try to drink at least a gallon of water. Again, this is based on a person weighing 150 pounds. You’ll need to determine your appropriate intake based on your weight.

How to Consume a Gallon a Day

When you actually break down the numbers, maybe it seems like a lot. However, spaced throughout the course of a day, it really isn’t. If you figure you’re awake 16 out of the 24 hours in a day, drinking 12 ounces per hour will get you to 192 ounces.

If you determine that this task is too challenging, you’re making a terrible mistake. Failing to drink adequate amounts of water isn’t just a matter of quenching your thirst, it’s about keeping your body healthy.

There are countless benefits to drinking the proper amount of water, but here are 10 of the most noteworthy:

  1. Water helps regulate your metabolism, which will help keep you thin. Also, if you feel hungry, satisfy that desire with a glass of water. It may not be as much fun, but it should do the trick and also keeping you from consuming unwanted calories.
  2. Helps lower blood pressure and other cardiovascular ailments. It can also help lower cholesterol.
  3. Provides energy and helps fight fatigue.
  4. A lack of water in the body can lead to light-headedness, dizziness and fainting.
  5. Improves your immune system.
  6. Helps to regulate the digestive system, reducing gas and bloating, as well as reducing your risk of constipation and other bowel issues.
  7. Helps prevent cramping.
  8. Flushes toxins from the body and improves kidney function.
  9. Keeps your brain functioning properly and at peak levels.
  10. Chronic dehydration can lead to heart attacks. The blood is composed primarily of water, and if the body doesn’t have enough, the blood thickens and may result in a heart attack.

So, if you still think drinking the right amount of water is an annoyance to too difficult, keep in mind that your life may very well depend on it. Also, don’t confuse the word “water” with the word “fluid.” While many other drinks – juices, sodas, teas, etc. – do contain water, they shouldn’t be consumed instead of water.
